Research interests

Sigri M. Gaïni´s main research interest lies within the field of political philosophy. The topics which she has engaged with during her work on the PhD are: freedom of speech, hate speech, 'cancel culture', 'political correctness', and hate speech legislation. Other topics of interest include: democracy, ethics, multiculturalism, universalism, and moral relativism.

Personal profile

Sigri M. Gaïni is a PhD student in political philosophy at Roskilde University and the University of the Faroe Islands. Her thesis is about freedom of speech, and whether there should be laws against hate speech. The thesis is article-based and the main focus is on the consequences that follow from not having passed hate speech laws in the US, one of which, she claims, is the growing 'cancel culture'.

Sigri has been an active participant in the public debate, both in the Faroe Islands and in Denmark, for a number of years. She has published many feature and debate articles in Danish and Faroese newspapers – most of them on contemporary topics, from a political-philosophical perspective. She has also had her own blog series, Gaïni um, on political philosophy in the Faroese newspaper, Dimmalætting (2022) and she is currently hosting a radio series about research, Gaïni &, for the Faroese public service broadcaster, KVF.

Teaching

Sigri M. Gaïni has taught on a number of courses in the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of History and Social Science at the University of the Faroe Islands. She has, inter alia, taught Philosophy of Science, Ancient Greek Democracy, Ethics, and Freedom of Speech (Human Rights).

Creative Works

Sigri M. Gaïni has published four collections of poems in Faroese - one of them, "2002 Nætur", for which she received the Faroese literacy prize, "Bókmentavirðisløn M.A. Jakobsens" in 2004.
